Ideally located on the left bank of the Rh\u00f4ne, divided by the Borgne River and very close to internationally renowned resorts including <strong>Zermatt<\/strong> and <strong>Verbier<\/strong>, today the valley is<strong> a popular tourist destination right in the heart of Canton Valais<\/strong>. Standing at the crossroads between tradition and modernity, its landscape, dotted with summits and unique geological landmarks, has been charming tourists from all backgrounds for centuries.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Yesterday\u2019s Tourism<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Val d\u2019H\u00e9rens was shaped by the retreat of the H\u00e9rens glacier at the end of the ice age, its V-shape being the direct result of glacial action during the diluvial period and the erosive power of water.<\/p>\n<p>From the 15th century, Val d\u2019H\u00e9rens became a strategic shortcut for pilgrims from Praborgne (the former name for Zermatt), which was in fact reached from Sion via the Col d\u2019H\u00e9rens.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8537\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8537\" class=\"wp-image-8537 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-1030x680.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-768x507.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-1536x1014.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-1500x990.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne-705x465.jpg 705w, https:\/\/www.dixence-resort.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Evol\u00e8ne-H\u00f4tel-de-la-Dent-Blanche-2-photo-ancienne.jpg 1579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Evol\u00e8ne &#8211; H\u00f4tel de la Dent Blanche<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Into the latter half of the 19th century, with the construction of the first hotels, <strong><b>the region began to experience a tourist boom<\/b><\/strong>. In 1858, the first hotel was built in Evol\u00e8ne: <strong><b>the H\u00f4tel de la Dent Blanche<\/b><\/strong>. There followed Les Haud\u00e8res, Arolla and Ferp\u00e8cle with its <strong><b>H\u00f4tel du\u00a0Col d\u2019H\u00e9rens <\/b><\/strong>opening in 1881. All these facilities provided mountain guides, porters and mules: these were new professions for the local shepherds, hunters and farmers who knew the mountains well. Very quickly, tourism became a real focus of activity in the valley, in particular thanks to <strong><b>mountaineering <\/b><\/strong>which was particularly fashionable at the time. The improvement of the road and rail network also enhanced this new phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>British tourists greatly contributed to <strong><b>the expansion of tourism in the region<\/b><\/strong>. Attracted by <strong><b>hiking and mountaineering<\/b><\/strong>, large numbers of British visitors were among the first to climb <strong><b>the alpine summits across the region<\/b><\/strong>. While the <strong><b>Dent d\u2019H\u00e9rens <\/b><\/strong>was first climbed in 1863, <strong><b>Mont Collon,<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0first climbed in 1867 by Foster, an Englishman, quickly became a popular challenge for the mountaineers of the time.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until 1862 that <strong><b>the Dent Blanche <\/b><\/strong>was in turn climbed for the first time by Messrs. Kennedy and Wigram.<\/p>\n<p>A very large quantity of literature and anecdotes recall <strong><b>alpine excursions in the region<\/b><\/strong>, some more infamous than others, such as that of a certain Dr\u00a0Hopkinson and his children who, during an excursion to <strong><b>the little Dent de\u00a0Veisivi <\/b><\/strong>in 1898, were swallowed by the abyss.<\/p>\n<p>For this region, overlooked by the Dent Blanche, tourism in those times was essentially limited to the summer season.<\/p>\n<p>From the beginning of the 20th century onwards, <strong><b>tourism in the Val d\u2019H\u00e9rens <\/b><\/strong>would be given a major new boost thanks to a novel attraction: the growing craze for <strong><b>winter sports<\/b><\/strong>. The valley was able to develop the infrastructure needed to make it an attractive destination for a new type of visitor. This is when the first <strong><b>ski lifts<\/b><\/strong>, in particular those in <strong><b>Thyon, Evol\u00e8ne or Arolla,<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0were installed. Growth in the secondary and tertiary sectors accelerated followed, with more and more people working in the hotel industry.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Tourism Today<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today, there is no shortage of tourist attractions in this region located on the doorstep of the 4 Vall\u00e9es ski area.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>A mountaineer at heart?<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the Val d\u2019H\u00e9rens, you will always find something to meet your passion for heights. Indeed, topping out at<\/p>\n<p>4357 metres, the Dent Blanche alone is worth a visit to the region. Located at the entrance to the small Valais village of the same name, these cone-shaped moraine formations are topped with imposing stone \u2018hats\u2019.
